Believe It or Not a Compound That Targets Your Belly Fat

The most common area in the body that almost everyone wants to improve is their stomach.  This is why the cover of most fitness magazines have headlines in bold that read something like, “Lose Belly Fat in 10 Days”  or “How to Get Sexy Abs like so and so”.

Yes, we’re a culture obsessed with abs.  Ironically, abs are the first feature on your body to accumulate fat and usually one of the last places to burn off.  Which is why we’re always on the lookout for the latest information that can make our lives just a little easier, when it comes to achieving those flat sexy abs garnered by the “heavily air brushed” celebrities on the front cover of magazines.  Well then, you’re in for a nice surprise!

A recent study done on this popular compound found that people that took it lost belly fat, compared to people that didn’t take it….and it was specifically belly fat that was affected.  Imagine that, it’s usually the other way around…you lose everything but the belly!  It’s nice to know that there’s a compound out there that’s feelin‘ your frustrations!  Find out what compound I’m talking about and how you can use it to help you burn off your stubborn belly flab!

The compound that I’m talking about is catechins.  Catechins are antioxidant compounds found in green teas, known to have beneficial effects against serious diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and cancer.  And now a recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition, indicates that drinking green tea with 625mg/d of catechin helps reduce belly fat when combined with exercise.  Yes, you do have to exercise!  But exercising is necessary anyway to help you lose weight, burn fat and also keep you healthy and disease free.  So just think of it as an added bonus….you get to lose your belly along the way!  Here’s a more detailed look at the study:

Double-blind study

Researchers recruited just over 100 adults between the ages of 21 and 65. The participants were all healthy and “normally sedentary”, with a mean BMI of 32kg/m². Most subjects were of non-Hispanic white ethnicity.

Male participants, who made up about half of the total study group, had a waist circumference of over 90cm, while women had a waist circumference of over 87cm. Cholesterol levels were over 5.2mmol/L.

The subjects were randomly assigned to receive either 500ml per day of a beverage providing 625mg catechins, or a control beverage containing added caffeine to match the caffeine content of the catechin beverage.

Both the active and the control beverage contained water, sodium chloride, artificial citrus flavouring, glucose, erythritol, and sucralose. Each 500ml serving provided 63kj (15 Kcal) of energy. Participants agreed not to consume more than two caffeinated beverages per day, including the study product, during the 12-week study period.

Participants consumed one serving of their assigned beverage per day, at any time of the day, and with or without food. They continued their usual energy intake, and three-day diet records were taken at baseline, six and 12 weeks.

During the study period, the subjects committed to 180 minutes of “moderate-intensity” physical activity per week, and to attend at lease three supervised exercise sessions per week.

So from the beginning, the study eliminated the caffeine factor.  This is good, since many people associate caffeine with boosting their metabolism to lose weight…which BTW is not the case.

I found it odd that they provided these people with green tea artificially sweetened with 3 different sweeteners, knowing how bad artificial sweetener is for (their) our health.  Here’s a list of sweeteners that was included in their drink:

  • glucose - simplest form of sugar
  • erythritol - naturally derived sugar substitute with no calories, also known as sugar alcohol
  • sucralose - an artificial sweetener also known as splenda which has been linked to all sorts of serious health problems like cancers, kidney failure and nerve damage

That’s some super sweet and unhealthy green tea!  But if that’s any indication of their normal diet, it makes the effects of catechins even more impressive.

Lastly, these people exercised 180 minutes a week at “moderate intensity”.  That’s 30 minutes a day 6 days week and keep in mind that these people are normally sedentary…which makes you wonder what’s considered moderately intense.  Now, if you’re normally sedentary and you start exercising at any any level of intensity, you will lose weight assuming all other factors are kept consistent, like diet etc.  But the interesting part about the study is as follows:

At the end of the study period, people in the catechin group were found to have lost more body weight compared to the control group (P = 0.079).

There were no significant differences between the two groups in changes in waist circumference or fat mass. However, both total abdominal fat area (P = 0.013) and abdominal subcutaneous fat area (P = 0.019) had decreased more in the catechin group.

So, the only part that they actually lost fat was in their belly region.  Considering all of the factors, the result is actually quite impressive.

Let’s think about it…these people are overweight with “normal sedentary” lifestyles.  Which by the way, is like saying healthy people have “abnormal active” lifestyles….go figure.

The people in the study did not change their diets, which meant that they probably kept eating the kinds of unhealthy foods that got them overweight in the first place.

Outside of drinking the artificially sweetened green tea with 650 mg/d of the active ingredient “catechins”, the only addition to their life was adding in 180 minutes of moderate exercising a week.

And let’s keep in mind, the subjective nature of the term “intensity”, where “moderate” can be interpreted quite differently to a sedentary individual as supposed to a normally active individual.

So all things considered, the fact that people participating in the study who drank the (not so healthy) green tea actually shrank in their belly region, is definitely notable.

Heck, since the active ingredient “catechins” has so many other health benefits we as well, what have you got to lose by including a little green tea in your day.  Except, I would definitely recommend drinking green tea without sugar or sweeteners, so you can get all the benefits without the negative downfalls of sugar.

As for the exercise portion, if you’re already active, I would recommend working out at high intensities for shorter durations to really crank up your metabolism at the same time.  If you’re working out hard enough, all you need is 20 - 30 minutes max!  You’ll get better results in less time.  I have thousands of people participating in my fitness program which is based on short but highly intense workouts and the results speaks for themselves.  If your interested checked it out at www.MAXWorkouts.com.

So here’s a quick summary:

  • Eat a well balanced diet consisting of whole, unrefined foods.
  • Drink a cup of green tea (about 500 ml) with 650 mg/d of catechins per day.
  • Participate in short but high intensity workouts regularly throughout the week.

So there you have it!  Another simple and easy tip you can do, to help you burn off that stubborn belly fat and get your flat abs back in time for summer!

Did you think drinking green tea had such an effect?

Are you a regular green tea drinker, and if so, what health benefits have you noticed?

Does anyone know whether taking the green tea supplements are as effective as drinking green tea?

Traci says: 05/06 05:17 AM

i assume that drinking diet with no sugar additives will increase the % of more belly fat and is that drinking at least one cup a day or more!

Tilt says: 05/06 05:26 AM

I have kind of fell off track recently due to hypoglycemia and depression. I have packed on some pounds. =( I noticed when i frequently drank green tea, how ever, my skin was noticeably more clear from acne, i was a healthier weight, and my appetite wasn’t insatiable like it normally is. I just started to drink it again for the skin benefits, and because i love the tea! to discover that it can help target the extra weight directly in the area i have recently accumulated it…..my tummy….IS GREAT!!! thank you Shin! p.s. green tea prevents skin cancer such as malignant melanoma whether you drink it or even bathe in it. Be Well.

Rick says: 05/06 05:32 AM

Can you purchase “catechins”? Is it an herb?
(650 mg added)

Mat says: 05/06 05:34 AM

good information, and nicely analyzed! What I find interesting is:

There were no significant differences between the two groups in changes in waist circumference or fat mass. However, both total abdominal fat area (P = 0.013) and abdominal subcutaneous fat area (P = 0.019) had decreased more in the catechin group.

Two things:
1. What - no change in waistline! Bummer.
2. If fat mass doesn’t decrease comparatively, but area does, does that imply thicker or denser fat?

What is the P value?

Once again you have blown me away with yet another simple and effective item to add to my diet. I really like green tea so now that gives me an excuse to drink more of it. Thanks Shin

minou says: 05/06 05:37 AM

i do drink a lot of green tea maybe 4 to 5 cups a day i love green tea but i do not no about (catechins) could you tell me where do
you buy this product
thanks

esther says: 05/06 05:59 AM

Wondering how long to steep green tea in order to get that “magic” amount of catechins and can you brew ahead and refrigerate and it will still be healthy and effective to drink.

Dan says: 05/06 06:00 AM

wow i never thought that green tea would have that affect on the human body, im goin to try it out and see how it works

esther says: 05/06 06:10 AM

Just did a little googling and seems to be need at least 5-10 cups especially for anti cancer benefits…so wondering could you just put 5 bags in 2 cups of water for a stronger brew and just “down” it and get it over with just for the sake of the benefits?

cecile says: 05/06 06:35 AM

Oh it would be great if I could actually drink green tea but unfortunately my body erupts in hives, very very ichy hives. Drives me crazy (some would say it is a short drive), but I also wonder if there is a suplement of catechins you can take.

Sha Hayes says: 05/06 06:36 AM

Hello Shin. Thank you so much for yet another very informative article. I am not a tea drinker “always equate the taste to equal eating dry leaves”. I was wondering if you could find the catechins in a supplement form?

Tricia says: 05/06 06:39 AM

I will start drinking more green tea as I never realized the benefits on this leven, but does de-caffeinated green tea work as well? I am a migraine sufferer and caffein triggers them.

luis P says: 05/06 06:47 AM

That is some great info!! Thanks again for all you do!

herb wells says: 05/06 07:43 AM

Don’t jump overboard on green tea on the basis of this one study. There are so many unclear variables that would change from one study to the next. I would guess that a repeat study by a different group woud have different effects.
Meaningful clinical studies require p values of .001 at the very least. Green tea per se may be the slightist of factors in achieving the result produced. The results suggest that belly fat decreased without a change in waist suggesting that abdominal musculature increased. Extracts of green tea are used as fat burners by serious body builders without good evidence that they do anything.

Poppet says: 05/06 08:26 AM

The study said

“At the end of the study period, people in the catechin group were found to have lost more body weight compared to the control group (P = 0.079)”

That is not a significant P value!

As the above the post quite rightly said, the study suggested an increase in musculature that is more than likely the result of the sedentary study population doing some exercise.

John Austin says: 05/06 08:56 AM

Yes, what are catechins, and where can I get hold of some?

sara goodwin says: 05/06 10:54 AM

Sorry I don t get it…are the catchechins in normal green tea or added….I usually get and love all articles…and this one is great, but can’t work this out

Ian Camilleri says: 05/06 11:31 AM

Sounds really interseting, will defiantly try the
tea out. I am partly following your programe, i start with 15 min high intensity intervall cycling, followed by my weights workout, half way threw my workmout i do another high intensity interval workout on the stepper 8-10min. I have seen some impressive gains since changing my work out.

Being of Asian background, I was taught by mom to drink any type of tea after consume a meal. She claimed it helps burn the fat. I was 7 years old then. Now more and more research I’ve been reading all over the internet on the benefit of green tea and tea in general.

You can drink green tea or coffee with STEVIA. It’s a natural sweetener 200 times sweeter than sugar and not chemically made. I only put a tip (size of my nail finger) in a cup of coffee or tea and it’s sweet like as if I had put honey or sugar. You can buy it at bodybuilding.com. Much cheaper price than supermarkets, etc.

Anonymous says: 05/06 01:19 PM

Shin, I couldn’t help but notice that both of the articles that you cited regarding sucralose and its link to various health complications gave no conclusions regarding the sweetener’s effect on one’s health. The first article had sucralose listed once in the entire article; furthermore, the article noted that aspartame, not sucralose, was linked to increased malignant tumors. I don’t mean to attack your article. Input or comments?

Shin Ohtake says: 05/06 03:36 PM

Teri
I believe so.  As long as it has sufficient amount of active ingredient in it.

Rick
You can buy it in supplement (tablet) form as well.

Mat
I admit the study is a little vague and since there was no change in the waistline, most may assume that there was a gain in muscle…perhaps?  I’m not sure either. They didn’t specify how they calculated abdominal fat areas either, so there’s really no way to know why there wasn’t a reduction in the waist circumference.  One possibility is that most abdominal fat distribution occurs below the belly button, and so perhaps the region of reduction was slightly more significant in area below the waist.  Again I’m not certain?  But what the study does say is that they lost weight and that the weight came off of the abdominal fat region.  Although there are holes in the study, I still found it interesting that catechins showed possible ability to help reduce belly fat.  Besides, there are so many other health benefits that come along with drinking green tea, that I’d just look at this as an added bonus.

Cecile
There are catechin supplements.  But I would make sure that you’re not allergic to the active compound first before taking it.

Sha Hayes
Yes, catechins do come in supplement form.

Tricia
Good question.  I’m not certain if decaffeinated green tea still has the active compound in it?  I’ll have to find out myself.

Poppet
I agree, it’s not a very significant value, but as I stated in an earlier reply (you can take a look at it above) there are some facts need to be considered before just throwing this study away.  As you know, belly fat is usually the last place to go for anyone exercising.  And since these people are overweight to begin with, I think it’s safe to assume that their diets aren’t conducive to insulin sensitivity.  Insulin insensitivity is one of the biggest reason why people gain weight, especially belly fat.  In fact, that’s the number one reason why people have a real difficult time losing anything off their stomach.  And as far as I know, participating in “moderate” exercise won’t do anything to help stimulate proper insulin function.  The only two things that effectively help re-sensitize your insulin is eliminating refined carbohydrate foods and foods containing refined sugars and high intensity exercises.  Which is why, I found it interesting that even though these people didn’t change their diets and only participated in moderate exercise, they still lost weight from their abdominal region and decreased their abdominal fat area (which I’m not sure what that entails).  And again as mentioned above, although there are holes in the study there are so many other health benefits that come along with drinking green tea, that I just look at this as an added bonus.

Sara Goodwin
Catechins are active ingredients found in normal green teas.  You can also get catechin supplements as well.

This sounds great, drinking green tea to help you loose weight. Draw back, what if you don’t like green tea?

Can green tea supplements give you the same benefits towards helping you to loose weight with adequate exercise.

I know you can buy tablets because I’ve seen them in my local health store.

please let me know, Thanks.  Dawn.

I began drinking two cups of green tea with about a teaspoon of local honey about two months ago. Also during this time, I beagn to eat 1/2 cup of blueberries and about 1 cup of spinach( either in my salad or sauted in about 1 tablespoon of olive oil) every day. The results are amazing. First, my vision has improved to where I don’t use my glasses or contacts nearly as much as I used to. I read that pilots in WWII ate blueberries to improve their night vision. Spinach is excellent for vision as well. These combined with the green tea is probbaly why I haven’t experienced my seasonal allergies the way that I normally do. I am usually sneezing like mad crazy right about now. Red, itchy, watery eyes were the norm. This being one of the worst allergy seasons in Texas in a long time and me having virtually no symptons at all is truly amazing. So thank God for his green tea, local honey, blueberries, and spinach.

Hi
Thank you for your fabulous website. Would you recommend a specific green tea like maybe ginger or mint?
What about adding lemon? Does lemon help to lose weight?

Ken says: 05/08 02:53 AM

Hi Shin,
I don’t really think I need to lose any weight at the moment, I am very active and eat as healthy as possible.
I noticed you said that catechins and green tea have many other benefits. What sort of benefits do they provide?
Thanks

john lincs says: 05/08 03:00 AM

I’ll be getting some of this green tea stuff, I have heard from other sources that it helps fat loss, but a targeted fat loss? Worth a try I’d say!

Rick says: 05/08 07:09 AM

Shin,

Looks like this info has all the troops stirred up a little, which is a good thing for me.  Can you give us a good source for a high quality green tea and or catechins?

Thanks and keep up the outstanding work!

Rick

rcromby says: 05/09 06:54 AM

I have heard about green tea by many but try as i may i just cannot get use to the taste. Please advise what tea works just as good, if there is any.

rand1026 says: 05/09 05:09 PM

I’m a green tea drinker and have seen some of the many benefits listed above.  I can’t speak specifically towards targeting belly fat, but all types of tea carry with them many health benefits, specifically being very good sources of antioxidants.  Naturally, they are healthiest in their most base form, meaning, try and get used to the taste of “any” tea without sweeteners or cream.  If you are going to sweeten, honey is a good, healthy choice.  Shin, as requested above, do you know of a good brand that has appropriate amounts of these catechins?  Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there.

Matt

Shin Ohtake says: 05/10 02:29 PM

Dawn Blake - Coleman,

You can get green tea / catechin supplements and as far as I know it’s just as beneficial.

William Moore,

That’s great to hear!  Thanks for sharing your experience.  FYI, you may be interested in looking into Quercitin for allergies as well, since it acts like a natural anti-histamine.

Angelica Vancea,

I’m partial to authentic Japanese green tea, and fortunately I get organic green tea sent to me from my mom in Japan.  Unfortunately, the package is all in Japanese and I really couldn’t tell you what it says (sad…I know).  So I don’t have a particular green tea from North America that I drink that I can recommend.  (Although, I’m sure there are many) I did a little search and here are a couple website that sells Japanese green tea.  I haven’t tried them out, so I can’t say what it’s like, but you may want to check them out.  Sorry I can’t be anymore helpful.  BTW, I would think adding lemon would only add to the beneficial factor of green tea.

Ken,

Catechins have been known to provide beneficial effects against serious disease like Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and cancer.

Rick,

Please read my response to Angelica above.  Thanks!

rcromby,

You can always try the supplements if you don’t like green tea?

Matt,

Sorry Matt, I don’t have any recommended sources, but please read the response I gave Angelica above.

Thank you.

Hey Shin,
I’m pretty lean at the moment and want to gain some lean mass.
I’m eating about 6-8 times a day, and pretty much all whole natural foods, plenty of fruit and vegetables, red meat 6-8 times a week, poultry 4-5 times a week, and fish 4-5 times a week, raw nuts every now and then.
What sort of things can I add to my diet to help build more lean muscle the healthy way without adding unwanted fat?

Thanks
