How to Avoid Butt Amnesia and Get Buns of Steel

Gluteus Maximus…it’s got a powerful ring to it, doesn’t it?  Sounds like it could even be a name of a Spartan warrior.  Well it’s not a name of a warrior…it’s actually the scientific name for your butt.  But it’s actually quite fitting when you figure the important role your butt plays in your body, as well as for athletic performance.  Speed, quickness, and power all hinge on your ability to utilize and maximize your glutes.  The more you’re able to use it the better you’ll be…for just about every sport.  The fastest, quickest and most powerful athletes are all able to harness the power of their glutes.  Learning to use your butt can really help boost your athletic performance.

Another real benefit of having strong glutes, is that it protects your low back.  In fact, many of the people that suffer from low back pain have a diminished use of their glutes.  They have what I call, “butt amnesia”.  Their butts don’t know how to work.  It’s been dormant for such as long time that when it’s called upon to do work, it doesn’t know how to and ends up passing the work along to other muscles…mainly your low back muscles.  Eventually your low back can’t take the excess work and it ends up getting strained. 

One reason for “butt amnesia” is a simple case of too much sitting.  Sitting for long periods of time tightens and shortens your hip flexor muscles.  Your hip flexor muscles are large powerful muscles that originate from your low back vertebrae and attaches to your upper thigh region.  Since your hip flexors are much larger and stronger than your low back muscles, when it plays tug a war, your low back muscles lose every time.  Ironically, the muscles that’s strong enough to counter act your hip flexors…your glutes…get shut down when it’s needed the most.  When your hip flexors are tight and over activate, it inhibits your glutes from being activated…go figure?  So what can you to do?

Before trying to wake your butt up (no pun intended), you need to deactivate your hip flexors.  And the best way to do so is to stretch them out.  Stretching your hip flexors for 30 to 60 seconds prior to exercising your glutes will help enhance your ability to activate and “wake up” your glutes from it’s dormancy.

Now that you know how to deactivate your hip flexors, you can take advantage of it and really work your butt!

Take a look at the video above for a simple, but very effective glute exercise that you can do to start strengthening your butt to help you alleviate low back pain, increase athletic performance and of course get you that tight and toned backside.

I’m a fat and lazy 49-year-old man from Iran, due to a knee injury happend in football 10 years ago, i   could not again continue the same football and it caused my weight reaches from 85 to 98 Kg be and now I have a big abdominal and request you to organize a program according to my age and weight so I can back to my previous weight or less

but i have some troubles with the reps .. cause one leg is able to do more reps than the other :( what should i do?? as many as possible on each side, or the same amount of reps based on the weaker leg??

HI, I have to be honest today is the first time I have opened your email.
I am a Ski Race Coach and spend alot of time traveling, and Coaching Skiing and Fitness.
I found your pesentation and explinations very good.  I have also noticed in the last few years that I am concentrating on athletes and not so much on myself anymore.  So there is something I will also be changing.

Hi Shin
I sit for 8 hours a day at a computer and know what you are talking about - it is a health hazard.  I did not realise the effect of sitting for long periods had on the hip flexors.  My lower back is always sore.  I will take your good advice (as per usual) and make sure I stretch them and add the glute exercise.

Yes I spend a lot of time with my computer too, but I do find some time in the morning before breakfast to do some stretching exercises, some squats with
dumbbells, the exercises from other Shin’s videos,
and I tried the butt exercises as well they are all
great.

I have purchased your products and are benefiting greatly from them.  I have lost over 40 lbs in 6 months.  I love watching your videos, they are very informative and educational.  However, your accoustics are so horrible in the gym that I can not understand a single word you are saying.  Please try watching one and honestly see if you can understand anything that you are saing. or, better yet, ask an unbiased source.  your auio is keeping you from reaching a lot of potential customers and make you look very amaturish.
