The Biggest Loser Gone Wild

“Crash diets” and “crash workouts” can affect your mood negatively, but what this former Biggest Loser contestant did takes irritability to a whole ‘nuther level.

A Little Background First…

I understand that the show, “The Biggest Loser”, is promoting fitness and helps shed light on the problem of obesity that is literally sweeping our nation.  But it’s still a reality show. There’s an underlining cheesiness factor with all reality shows that I just can’t seem to get over.  Maybe it’s all the MTV Real World episodes I used to watch when I was younger.  It just left a lingering bad taste in my mouth.

Nonetheless, reality television is here to stay and it’s become a huge part of our society. And even though human drama is always the underlying force behind any popular reality show, perhaps there is some redeeming quality about The Biggest Loser.

The show does help the contestants lose weight, albeit not the best way, and I suppose it does give viewers some incentive to actually get up off the couch and start getting in shape.  But there’s a lot about the show that I definitely do not like.

First of all, the way things are set up.  Contestants are being set up for long term failure.  Simply put, no one has the time to do what these people are doing to get the weight off.  Now I know it’s for TV and they only have a limited amount of time to do this, but let’s think outside the ratings for a minute.

These are real people with real problems.

You can’t just put folks on a crash diet and boot camp for 3 months, have them lose 100 pounds and then expect them to keep it off after they leave the show. Talk about Post Biggest Loser Syndrome…

Here’s What Happened

“Biggest Loser Star Busted for Throwing Flour in Tenant’s Face”. I kid you not - that was the Yahoo! News headline that caught my attention.

Turns out that a former contestant had a tenant that lived in her basement apartment who was being too noisy.  The former contestant “allegedly kicked in the door”, threw flour in his face and damaged some of his personal property.  Flour?  Come on!  If you wanted to really hurt someone would you pick flour?  I guess she really wanted to get rid of those bad carbs!

Besides the actual incident (and who knows what really happened) there’s always more to the story. It got me thinking about this contestant and how she’s doing after the show, since there were no recent pictures.

—Is she sticking to some type of program?

—Did she slide backwards in to her old habits?

—Is she grabbing at straws to maintain her level of fitness and physique she attained during the show?

Of course, I can’t know for sure if the flour-throwing incident was in any way connected to the show.  But I do know that it’s not uncommon for people to feel slightly down after reaching a goal, let alone coming off such a popular show.

I also know certain diets (like a high protein diet) can really affect one’s mood by restricting the levels of serotonin, which can definitely make you grouchy and irritable. I hope she’s not grabbing at straws and jumping on the next fad diet to keep her weight down. I hope that show keeps in touch with her and gives her some recommended weight management plan she can stick to.

Problems with Crash Diet & Crash Workout Programs

There are many problems with crash diets and boot camp style workouts that help you “kick start” your way to a new you. One particular problem is that it’s just not maintainable. It makes you susceptible to yo-yo weight loss, not to mention, burn out.

Another problem is that these type of diets and workouts are most often associated with a short term goal that’s usually time dependent. For instance, if you have a high school reunion to go to at the beginning of summer and you want to lose a certain amount of weight so you can dress to impress. What happens after that?

Many people fall off the bandwagon because they’ve associated their goal to a specific event or a timeline.  It’s common to lose motivation after reaching you goal.  And before you know it, you’re right back where you started.

Lastly, you lose the fun and enjoyment of the process.  When you get caught up in just losing the weight fast and achieving your goals at any cost, you lose focus of what’s really important.

I also know for a FACT that many of the amazing before and afters you see on those cheesy fitness TV informercials (the ones that come on at 2am), are due to crash diets and boot camp style workouts.  Oftentimes, the programs that the before and after people are put on do not even include anything from the program being advertised to you!  In most cases, these people are being paid to get the results so that the advertised product looks legit.  It’s unfortunate and misleading, but it’s true.  Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

What’s Really Important To Achieving Your Goals

Losing weight may be the goal, but ultimately you need to enjoy the process in order to truly win the game. Give yourself a reward midweek for sticking to your workout and eating regimen.  Learn how to cook food that’s healthy and tasty. Join a club or a league with your friends and do things that are enjoyable. Finding enjoyment in the process will make your goals much easier to attain and maintain.

What do you think of the Biggest Loser flour-throwing incident?  Have you struggled in the past because of a crash diet or crash workout plan?  How did it make you feel?

I’m betting you’re right.  After the show they were probably like, “good job, thanks for being part of the show…NEXT”.  What do they care about what happens to her diet/exercise in the future?

But who knows, maybe she was a big ol’ bitch in the first place!

What always bugs me about the show is the focus on how much / percentage of body weight a person has lost each week. How long can and should people be expected to lose 9 - 11 pounds per week.  When they only lose 1 - 2, which is actually a healthier # of weight loss, they somehow are treated as failures.  A high number of pounds lost doesn’t mean it is all body fat. Some of my biggest progress was measured in inches lost, even though the scale didn’t budge.

Hi

What i understand is that more than achieving weight loss the focus should be on getting their metabolism correct by incorporating practically (which means diet which can be followed in day to day life easily)feasible diet and exercise routine in their day to day life. Also they should be educated on different food ingrdients with their nutritional importance so that they can understand what to eat when and in what proportion.

The show is base on losing weight and trying not to get thrown off the show. That is their biggest motive for “crashing”. Certainly, I believe they want to lose the weight and for good but the show does’nt care about “after care”. It is like paying an alcoholic to quit drinking so that one is reunited with ones family but after that your on your own. If the show really cared, no one would be thrown off the show and the show would treat the real problem behind the obesity. Yea, I watched the season opener this past week and shed a little tear for them but then it came time for someone to leave the show and then it was “like” ok…. you’re own your own now good luck .... see you on the rebound…oops.  That was’nt really politically correct but when fat you can do that to others who are. I want weight lose to last so I am researching the best possible ways to lose weight and keep it off. My motive is not for money or some other prize.

Amen, Although some of my clients love the show I cant help but dislike it. Most of my clients come to me and say “so-and-so on the Biggest loser lost 50 pounds in 3 weeks, why can’t I do that? What’s wrong with me?”
I figure for every single person the show motivates, it also frustrates. Even after I explain how the set up of the show is not realistic for real people with real lives they just don’t get it. (*sigh*)

Hi Shin,

I see one and only one real benefit to this show. If you are watching the show, you can’t help but think about your own fitness level, and weight loss goals.  I really believe that in order to lose weight and keep it off or attain fitness and stay there, you have to immerse yourself in your program, your goals and your accomplishments.  Much the same way that the overweight Mom immersed herself in her children as the force which led to her weight gain, she must now immerse herself in her fitness goals.  I find that to be an incredible asset of the internet and sites such as yours.  People who go to your site can’t help but be thinking about their goals and how to attain them.  It most definitely helps in the motivational arena.  Thanks.

Hello Mr. Shin and Fellow Readers,
I can agree w/all the statements, frustrations and disappointment w/the The Bigger Loser.  But let’s remember the bottom line; it’s a “reality show” – entertainment, aired for ratings, to include, they work out eight plus hours a day.  If I worked out eight plus hours a day and ate properly I could lose enormous amounts of weight too.  The portion of the show that teaches the contestants how to properly eat is the best part of the show, in my opinion.  The fact that they come on the show and lose unrealistic amounts of weight a week than the average everyday person is disturbing and can be frustrating to a viewer that is 300+ pounds.  However, on the other hand, the contestant that is 18 yrs old, 400+ pounds and taking 20 different medications has a second chance at life, whether through a crash diet or not.  I think the fact that you are sent home should not discourage you, however, allow you continue to try to lose weight.  It is inspiring for someone who has been obese most of their life and never lost one pound.  Some of the contestants don’t think they can do it.  It gives hope, to the hopeless.  And those of us that know the truth behind weight loss can educate and help our friends, family, clients and anyone we come in contact w/that may be struggling to maintain their health.  Not everyone can be a Biggest Loser Contestant, but changing your lifestyle to being fit and healthier makes you The Biggest Winner any day.

I will say, I really love this show! My husband hates all reality shows and will not watch them.
This week with the biggest loser, bob in general, I felt he was a little childish. Crying when he lost his team that was beating the other teams butt. It reminded me of a mother dropping off her kid at day care and coddling them and saying its alright your ok and right after they leave the kid cries for an hour. I truly felt he sabotaged jillian by upsetting his old teammates that way! They didnt trust her judgement. But now I believe they do. I
am doing the biggest loser and so far have lost 30lbs. It may not be the best way to get it off, but I havent been a normal weight in about 8 years. Now I am. My husband eats better, and my daughter, who was overweight, is now in a 5 and making healthy choices. Its a trickle down effect that helps many. my small town has 35 people on this biggest loser go around. And I have seen a marked reduction in overweight people in my town alone. Every 6 months they do another biggest loser. Theres got to be a good 200 people in my small town that have benefited. Now think of there families and The way the mothers and wives are feeding there kids and husbands for 6 months atleast! I know I can maintain with the help of your site and a great site called calorie counter about. I never had the support I have had this go around. Thank goodness for the internet, its all there at a touch of your finger!

Shin Ohtake says: 02/27 02:37 PM

It’s great to hear from an actual contestant and it’s great to hear that you have not only helped yourself but your family and the people in your town!  Way to go!  I may not be a fan of the show, but it’s great to hear that it’s had a positive effect on you and the community.
Keep up the great job!  wink

I just started watching the show and while I enjoy seeing the transformation in the contestants, it IS a bit frustrating to see them lose so much weight, while I’m losing slowly. (But that is soon to change because I JUST started MAX workouts!) I remind myself that all they are doing is working out. They are not living in the real world with real temptations. They have a trainer pushing them constantly and so they are able to drop so much weight. I AM living in the real world, fighting temptation, and trying really hard not to get discouraged. I just make myself keep in mind that this is just a show and to keep on keepin’ on and not compare my results to those on the show and I WILL get the results I’m working to get.

Heather says: 05/15 01:47 PM

One thing I hate about that show is someone will have dropped like 80 pounds wich is AMAZING!!!! But because someone has to win, when they weight at the end of the show it get competitive and their priorities are all messed up. I watched a whole show where each person lost like 80 each, then when they weighed if they only lost like 5 pounds they were in tears. Im always annoyed and I have to turn the t.v. off. Instead of being like “I effin rock Ive lost 85 pounds now”, they are crying and dissapointed in themselves cause they “let thier team down”. Are you kidding me?!!..then as people said above they think they are going to go home and see the same numbers. I have clients do the same thing as far as not understanding why people on the show can lose like that and I have to explain to them I only have an hour 3 days a week with them, not hours a day everyday, and that they have to watch what they do when they aren’t with me. So yea, I feel ya on the show, lol. I will use it for ideas though everynow and then when I get bored with routines that I make..but other than that it irritates me like most reality shows, lol.
