The Secrets To Staying Young

The fountain of youth. A mystical fountain that stops the aging process so you can stay forever young.  Well, no one’s found it quite yet, but we’re getting close!  Aging can be prolonged even more today than it was just a few years ago.  But these new findings may accelerate anti-aging research even further.

We’ve got everything under the sun from superfoods that annihilates free radicals to super-duper skin care products that keep your skin so moist and hydrated that if you wring your hands together you can actually squeeze water out.  Then there’s the ultimate nip and tuck makeover where you can look like any cartoon character with your skin pulled back so tight that it looks like you’ve been stuck in a wind tunnel for a day.

In a world where Hugh Hefner can be with multiple girls at his age with a little pharmaceutical help, you gotta to wonder what’s next.  HGH (Human Growth Hormones)?  Well I know Sly Stallone will probably swear by it!  Although the long term side effects are still unknown, the quest and desire for attaining youth may be far greater than the consequences.

I live in LA, the land of the beautiful (at any cost), and where the episodes of Nip Tuck aren’t that far from the reality. My neighbors all look like Ken and Barbie, or rather Paris, Nicole, Lindsay, Brad, and or whoever garners the latest cover of Us Weekly. Now, living in LA does have it’s advantages—it definitely keeps you motivated to stay in shape since it’s beach weather practically all year long here.  More importantly though, it keeps me in the loop of what the next thing is in the fast paced world of health, fitness, and beauty.

The latest thing I heard about was a chemical called resveratol.  Now, I just heard about it and didn’t really know much about it, until I read an article in the New York Times. Here’s the skinny: Unlike botox, resveratol doesn’t come from a deadly nerve killing toxin,  but rather from the skin of grapes.  Apparently it has a couple of potent effects, most notably that it helps neutralize the effects that fatty foods have on our bodies and it triggers a group of proteins that control cellular metabolism.  In short, it effectively slows down the cellular aging processes.  Here’s an excerpt from the article:

A new insight into the reason for aging has been gained by scientists trying to understand how resveratrol, a minor ingredient of red wine, improves the health and lifespan of laboratory mice. They believe that the integrity of chromosomes is compromised as people age, and that resveratrol works by activating a protein known as sirtuin that restores the chromosomes to health.

The finding, published online Wednesday in the journal Cell, is from a group led by David Sinclair of the Harvard Medical School. It is part of a growing effort by biologists to understand the sirtuins and other powerful agents that control the settings on the living cell’s metabolism, like its handling of fats and response to insulin.

Researchers are just beginning to figure out how these agents work and how to manipulate them, hoping that they can develop drugs to enhance resistance to disease and to retard aging.

Of course, the research is far from getting excited about since it’s not yet proven, but many of the researchers seem to be on board already since some are already taking resveratrol as a supplement for “research” purposes. This doesn’t mean we should all start consuming gallons of red wine and eating mounds of grapes!  That’ll certainly have an effect, but I guarantee it won’t be anything to do with regaining our youthful genes. More like a massive headache with an overdose of ex-lax.  But it’ll be interesting to keep up with the research in the next couple of years or so.

Until further research and and case studies are done, I’ll stick to what I know and keeping fighting the aging process the old fashioned way… Working out, eating well with tons of greens (loaded with antioxidants), getting as close to 8 hours of sleep as I can, and trying my best to deal with stress in the most effective way possible.

What do you think about all these anti-aging products and what are your secrets to staying young?  Post a comment…

Laughter - that’s such a good one Wendy!  I find myself watching more and more light hearted type movies lately instead of depressing subjects.  Feeling happy does a body good cheese

Always intersted in bodily health. Spent large part of my life cycle racing and working out in the gym. Now at 76 I feel great and full of confidence in the contribution I can make, and will continue to make, helping as many people to likewise live a healthy, joyful and productive lifelife. As I see it, that is what life is meant to be.

Nutritional supplements are absolutely vital in providing what the body needs to be healthy, regular food does not adequately do this no matter how careful a person may be in its selection.

I chose the Herbalife inner and outer nutrition products 20 years ago and alongside my racing and gym work it has produced a pro active outlook on life. I know that consistency in following anything that is good produces results. Goog luck with all the work that you do.

I agree with everyone’s suggestions above! Especially ... as Carlos Mencia says, “If you ain’t laughin’, you ain’t livin’.”

I did notice recently, as I just hit 35, that my skin gets incredibly dry and it enhances any lines I have in my face. Taking fish oil has solved the extreme dryness. Before I was using straight vaseline and olive oil on my face, plus my humidifier at night.  Now, I can use regular moisturizer.  It has really improved the quality of my skin—and the youthfulness of my appearance.

A wise women told me “everything in moderation”. I believe if we treat our bodies with the respect they deserve it will perform well for many years, it can work well as long as it is’nt overloaded.

grin It is quite simple really, you marry a woman 24 years younger then yourself, have a baby boy at age 62, never retire, work out 3 times a week for 2 hours each time, and keep up with the baby boy as he grows.

Everyone else beat me to the good advise. I agree with the above mentioned. Be active, eat well, be as happy as possible, laugh everyday, and take supplements and/or herbs as needed. Try to live well and stay healthy.

To stay forever young? For what? I am sorry about my comment and my English, too, but I’m coming to other culture.I think it’s better to show your age and do all what it needs for be in your time. I think it is funny to think that you can be at 50’s like was at 20’s!It’s a foolish! Nobody wants to live forever! Every age has his problems and wonders.

Susan says: 12/12 10:13 AM

Andrei, I know where you’re coming from and agree with you in some aspects, but the point here is about feeling younger.  To me, that’s about what everyone here has said…stay healthy, workout, laugh, play, etc… Feeling young means having more energy, stamina, challenging yourself.  I don’t think it has to do with just your years - it’s how you look and feel in the years you have.

That said, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting to maintain a youthful look (I’m not talking about plastic surgery or wearing half-shirts when you’re 60).  I just had my 30th birthday this year and I’m conscious about the way I look.  I’m not obsessed, but of course I want my face and body to look maintained and be the best they can be.  That makes me feel good!  And anyway, 30 is the new 20, right?  wink

Fred Riley says: 12/12 10:55 AM

Andrei, Nobody can stay young forever but you know Andrei! Whilst we are here on this earth it would be a shame if we did not keep our body in good condition. It is the only one we will ever have. In a sense it is not a question of age. It is more a question of making the most of this short time on earth and making the most means keeping in good condition. As a result of the effort from excercise, good nutrition, both inner and outer, adequate sleep, and spiritual growth, we enjoy more energy, joy and happiness and increase the opportunity of living longer. So all of this is not to look younger, it is to feel younger so that we can do more things and help more people. It is sad that many people neglect themselves, age more quickly but even more worrying rely on the medical profession to keep them alive. This neglect costs the state a lot of money which the tax payers have to find.Hope you find some of these points worthy of concideration?

A strong antioxidant such as resveratol can be obtained in concentrted dose from Free Life int. company in product called Daily Edge. it has the equivalent reservatol found in multiple glasses of wine. Of course, taking in the daily servings of a color rainbow of vegetables daily, working out and drinking GoChi juice (only one with real data behind it) and a solid exercise program are key.
