Best Warm Up Drills for Outdoor Running (Video)

With summer just around the corner I’m getting a lot of questions about working out outside.  And since the easiest and the most popular outdoor workout is running, I thought it would be a good idea to show you some simple but effective warm up drills you can do to warm up your legs and get your heart rate up before you go for a run.

Check out the video below for the warm up drills.

Now, I’m a fan of interval training, so I always do some type of interval cardio when I run. So whether you’re on a track or a park or even on the side streets of your neighborhood try doing some intervals.  It can be as simple as running fast one block followed by an easy run the next block and repeat it a number times. It’s a great fat burning and cardio workout. But even if you’re doing a longer easier run, this warm up drill is still very beneficial.  The warm up can be done anywhere.  All you need is a pair of running shoes and maybe some of your favorite tunes playing on your iPod.

Try out these drill and let me know how you do.  Did I miss any of your favorites?  Post your comments below!

Hi, Shin.  I’ve been doing your workouts for about 9 months now, and I started more long-distance running in April, but by mid-May I pulled or strained some ligaments or tendons on the outside of my ankle.  It’s been two weeks now, and I can do an easy shuffle.  Is there a good way to warm up and strengthen the anklea so I don’t have this problem again?

Thanks, Lynn in Simi Valley

Hi, Shin i was wondering what sort of excercises you would recommend to me that would help me get and define my six pack. Anything excercises that would help, how many reps should i be doing and so on ?

hi there. i have tried your stuff and especially love the tabata workouts! unfortunately my will for exercise is weak and after a month (with the beginning of winter and all) I was off everything again. I saw profound results within two weeks and people have noticed but I have such a short attention span and bore easily ..... not to mention my 12 hour shifts 3 times a week.

Anyway, i have managed to make it more fun by inviting all my girlfriends and getting a good friend of ours, who is a personal trainer, and arranged for regular bootcamps! I have one concern though: throughout my sporting and dancing and gymnastic career at primary and secondary school I could never ever ever do a situp unassisted. It makes me want to cry!!! I have a very arched back and thought that might make it more difficult but I do not think that is it.

If you have any amazing lower ab strengtheners I would be the happiest chick around! I need to get my core stronger sothat I can show them next time we have a bootcamp session.

PS. I have been out of dance and gymnastics and athletics for almost 11 years now, so I am having to start all over again.

Peace
elmethra

Try sprint training, interval training, slower runs, faster runs, recovery runs, etc. Just switch it up and make sure you don’t run the same way every time.
