Try This Killer Outdoor Circuit Workout Using Just Your Bodyweight (Video)

With summer officially here, I thought it would be a great idea to give you an outdoor workout so you can get your heart pumping, muscle burning, and sweat pouring to burn that last bit of excess fat off… just in time to bare it all and get your tan on.

The workout I have today can be done anywhere with an open field.  It combines a little of everything—speed, strength, and agility.  It’s a great way to get outside and change up your routine from just running, which is by far the most common outdoor workout.  Remember, too much long running will ruin your hard earned beach body (by eating away your muscle) and you’ll end up looking less toned and more flabby.  It’s best to mix up your workouts with shorter, more intense workouts to burn the fat while keeping your lean muscle.

Watch the video below to see the entire workout.  Oh, by the way I somehow talked my wife into demonstrating it.  Check out her reaction and see what she really thinks about it!

Here’s a quick warm up and a recap of the workout:

Warm Up
Run Forward/Run Backward/Side Shuffle/Side Shuffle/Bear Crawl/Crab Walk
Go about 10 - 15 yards per exercise. Repeat it 3 times.

Main Set
5 Burpees (with or without push ups)
20 yard Forward Sprint (Pump you arms)
20 yard Side Shuffle (Keep low to the ground)
20 yard backward sprint (Pump you arms)
20 yard side shuffle (Keep low to the ground)

Take 30 seconds rest, and then do:

5 Burpees (w/ or w/o push ups)
20 yard Bear Crawl (Quick)
20 yard Crab Walk (Quick)

Take 30 seconds rest and repeat the entire set 6 - 8 rounds

What do you think?  Can you pull off 6-8 rounds of this intense circuit workout?  Please post your comments below…

Hi Shin. I have found your advice & articles very interesting & informative, but have yet to use any of your advice as I’ve just recovered from Diverticulitis (infection of lining of large intestine) and a bladder& prostate operation 2½ weeks back, & the Doctors advised no strenuous activity for 4 weeks from op, because of chances of bleeding in the bladder. What type of exercise would you suggest I start off with? Prior to getting ill I was running for 15 minuets 5 times a week since mid March. I don’t belong to a gym, but I’ve installed a pull-up bar & have use of my wife’s Aeromax Ball etc. & a healthwalker & her 1½Kg dumbells. For the last 14 years my mode of transport to work was on a bicycle, ±6Km per day. I’m 45 &weigh; 66Kg &I’m 1.73m short. Look forward to your expert advice.
Regards David. (in Oudtshoorn, South Africa)

Aaron says: 06/24 11:52 PM

What on earth?! People actually do this stuff in public? People will probably come up and ask if the person doing it took their medication! It looks insane dude - who is actually gonna do this stuff in public? I can see that it definitely raises the heart rate but I am not going to make a fool of myself doing that in public.

RD says: 06/25 08:57 AM

Aaron - c’mon dude, are you really that uptight and worried what people will think?  Here’s what they’ll think (if they really care as much as you think they do):  “Wow.  That guy is exercising”.  See, no big deal.  What you must think of people doing yoga outside sticking their butts in the air every 2 seconds.  I mean…who cares?  They’re trying to get fit because there more worried about what they look like in public when they’re NOT exercising.  Now THAT makes sense.

Joe says: 06/27 06:33 AM

Dear Shin,

Another great work out. I have to admit I totally tanked at three rounds. You do 6?!!

I greatly appreciate your emphasis on short, intense workouts using functional exercises. It creates the optimal hormonal response for fat loss and muscle building while building accessory muscles and functional patterns that translate into the real world.

Aron- Let me encourage you to worry less about what other people think. As RD said, it’s more likely someone would be impressed that your exercising than that they think you look foolish. As if someone does think you look foolish, so what?

Pay more attention to what’s good for you. Give this workout a try. It will help you physically and might help you step out of your comfort zone in other ways as well

Stay Well

I first watched this and thought, “Yeah, right!” But when I read comments about how silly you’d look it hit me- get over yourself and try it. I was in an open park on a busy street, and didn’t notice anything but how hard I was working at the routine.

I only lasted 5 round though. It was 93 degrees out! It worked me out pretty hard though. Thanks!

Max50 says: 06/29 06:07 PM

I tried this yesterday and had to modify to 40 yd bear crawl (no crab walk) and admit resting 60 sec after bear crawl before starting again but was able to get 7 rounds in. Good stuff.

KILLER!  Could only do 2 rounds, and all to an audience of elementary school kids gaping at the “crazy” foreigner. No shame!

Keep up with these excellent workouts!

Tony Doolin says: 01/06 06:57 PM

Wow !! Excellent workout. It really does give you a total body workout. I do it myself regularly now and add some light rounds of dumbbell excercises in between. I have also incorporated it into my Muay Thai classes and everyone loves to hate it because it’s so difficult to maintain for 6 rounds, however it certainly gets results.

Thank’s Shin, every excercise you have promoted so far have given great results.

Keep up the great work.

Tony
