Lie #1: “To Lose Weight, You Have to Exercise More”
Alright, so my friend, Don, just turned 50.
Like a lot of guys, his metabolism has slowed down a bit. He’s not burning calories like he used to.
At 25 you can eat anything. By 30? You have to be careful. By 50? Let’s say Don was feeling like it was all downhill from there.
When you start a personal training session, the first thing you’ll do is outline some goals. Then, your trainer will create a “plan of action.”
So Don tells his new trainer about his weight loss goals.
And the very first piece of advice—it comes out in the plan—is an hour of cardio, 5 times a week PLUS 3 personal training sessions each week (the personal training sessions are 60 minutes each as well).
That’s 8+ hours of workouts suggested on the VERY FIRST DAY of working with a new personal trainer.
Are hours of endless workouts really necessary?
I don’t think so. And established research agrees.
With the right combination of exercises and effort, you can experience the same effect as 7+ hours of exercise in as little as 20 minutes per day (I’ll show you how at the end of this article).
Why did they tell my friend Don this lie? My best guess was to sell group exercise classes to him.
